The 3-3-3 Rule: What Every New Dog Owner Needs to Know 🐾

Let’s paint a picture.

You’ve just adopted a dog. You’ve been dreaming about this moment for months. You imagined cuddles on the sofa, joyful zoomies in the garden and a bond so deep it makes your heart hurt in the best possible way.

And then you get home.

And your new dog walks in, sniffs the corner, and proceeds to hide behind the sofa for three days straight 😐

You’re confused. You’re worried. You’re Googling things at 2am that you really shouldn’t be Googling.

Here’s what you need to hear: everything is fine. Your dog is fine. YOU are fine.

You just didn’t know about the 3-3-3 rule 💛

What Is the 3-3-3 Rule? 🐾

The 3-3-3 rule is the single most important thing nobody tells you when you bring a new dog home.

It describes the three phases almost every dog goes through when adjusting to a new environment — whether they came from a rescue centre, a rehomer or anywhere else.

3 days. 3 weeks. 3 months.

That’s it. Simple, beautiful and completely life changing when you actually understand what’s happening 🥹

The First 3 Days: Survival Mode 😔

Your new dog is overwhelmed.

Think about it from their perspective. Yesterday their whole world was somewhere else entirely. Today they’re in a new house with new smells, new sounds, new people and absolutely no idea what happens next.

Their nervous system is in overdrive.

In the first 3 days you might notice:

🐾 They won’t eat — or they eat like they’ve never seen food before

🐾 They won’t look at you directly

🐾 They find one spot and refuse to leave it

🐾 They seem completely switched off

🐾 Their personality is nowhere to be found

Please hear this: this is not who they are. This is not a sign you’ve made the wrong choice. This is not a broken dog.

This is a dog processing an enormous amount of change. It is essentially a trauma response — their nervous system doing exactly what it’s supposed to do to keep them safe.

What to do in the first 3 days:

Resist the urge to overwhelm them with love 💛 We know. It’s hard. They’re RIGHT THERE and they’re SO CUTE and you just want to squeeze them forever.

But less is genuinely more right now.

No big gatherings. No excited visitors. No forcing cuddles they haven’t asked for yet.

Give them a quiet safe space. Let them come to you in their own time. Keep your voice calm and your movements slow.

Your only job in the first 3 days is to be the calmest, safest, most boring person they’ve ever met.

Thrilling stuff 😂

3 Weeks: Oh Hello, There You Are 🐾

Around week three something magical starts to happen.

You’ll catch them watching you from across the room with what can only be described as cautious optimism. Their tail will wag when you come home — just slightly at first, then more confidently. They’ll steal something they definitely shouldn’t have and look absolutely delighted with themselves.

Ladies and gentlemen — your dog has arrived 🥹

In the first 3 weeks:

🐾 Their real personality starts to shine through

🐾 They begin testing boundaries (completely normal — think of it as them getting comfortable enough to misbehave)

🐾 A routine starts to feel familiar and safe

🐾 The bond between you begins forming in the quietest, most beautiful way

Your job in the first 3 weeks:

Routine is everything right now. Same walk times. Same feeding times. Same bedtime. Same everything.

Boring? Yes. Transformative for your dog? Absolutely 💛

Reward calm behaviour. Keep training sessions short and positive. And when they push boundaries — and they will — stay consistent without drama.

Predictability is the love language of a dog finding their feet 🐾

3 Months: Fully, Completely, Embarrassingly Yours 🥹💛

Oh this moment. THIS moment.

The dog who wouldn’t make eye contact is now staring at you like you personally invented sunshine. The dog who hid behind the sofa is now ON the sofa — specifically in your spot, with absolutely zero shame about it 😂

The dog who you briefly wondered if they even liked you?

They are now your shadow, your best friend and your most devoted fan. Congratulations — you’ve officially been chosen 💛

By three months most dogs are:

🐾 Fully settled and thriving

🐾 Deeply bonded with their new family

🐾 Showing their whole hilarious wonderful personality

🐾 Sleeping well, eating well and living their absolute best life

Three months. That’s the timeline. Not three days. Not three weeks.

Three months of showing up consistently and the payoff is a bond that lasts a lifetime 💛

Why This Rule Matters So Much 💔

Every year thousands of dogs are returned or rehomed again — not because they were the wrong dog, but because their owner didn’t know about the 3-3-3 rule.

They saw a dog that seemed shut down and assumed that was just who they were.

They panicked when their dog wouldn’t eat for two days.

They thought the lack of personality meant something was wrong.

They gave up. Just before the breakthrough 💔

We started Furdopt because we believe every single dog deserves to find their perfect person. And every person deserves to find their perfect dog.

But that match only works if both sides show up for the full three months 🐾

The Most Important Thing We Want You To Know 💛

Your dog is not broken.

They are not difficult.

They are not the wrong dog for you.

They are new. And new takes time 🥹

Give them 3 days of safety 😔

Give them 3 weeks of routine 🐾

Give them 3 months of love 💛

And then watch — actually watch — as they become the dog you always dreamed of.

They’re not giving up on you 💛

Please don’t give up on them 🐾
